Bryan Hulbert – SAPULPA, Okla. (May 23, 2018) With the weather altering Blake Hahn’s original lineup of events with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products, Blake was still able to get in three A-Features in two nights at Creek County Speedway.
Posting a trio of top-ten finishes, with two in the top-five, Hahn’s top finish on the weekend was a third-place showing with the ASCS Red River Region on Friday night.
“It was a fun weekend. Getting to race close to home is always a great time. Running well just makes it even better,” said Blake.
Running the Griffith Truck and Equipment No. 52 in ASCS competition on Friday, the night started off slow with a sixth-place finish in the third Heat Race.
“We ran the gear we had always run and need way more. I don’t think I turned it 7,800RPM the whole Heat Race. The track looked like it had a lot of grip, but it was actually slick. We ended up borrowing a set of gears and stacked another 50 points in for the feature and it was a rocket.”
Gridding the field 16th, Hahn raced through the field to grab the final podium step coming to the checked flag.
“The gear made all the difference. Once we got the RPM where it needed to be, the car operated and rotated pretty much where I wanted it to. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get Wayne for third, but I just put it to the cushion as hard as it would go and got him coming to the finish, which, getting a pass on Wayne like that is rare.”
Double-duty with the USAC Wingless Sprints Oklahoma for Jerry McGehee in the No. 55h, Blake would again have to dig from deep in the running order. Placing fifth in the Heat Race, Hahn took the green in the A-Feature from 14th.
“That class doesn’t allow the ASCS style engine. It’s basically a wingless Champ Sprint, so you have to run a Carburetor, and it kept loading up off the turns, so they ended up re-jetting it for the feature and it was a lot better. In the feature, I just had to go where they weren’t. We got held up a few times, otherwise, I think I could have made it to another podium, but going 14th to fifth felt pretty good.”
Opting to stay close to home on Saturday with a forecast that called for severe weather around Lawton, Okla. Hahn was again in the McGehee No. 55, but this time with wings on.
“We were okay on Saturday. The carburetor was still giving us some fits, but it got better as the night went on. I felt a little out of place because I don’t know anything about how to tune a Carburetor, but luckily Jerry and those guys knew what to do.”
Fourth in his Heat Race, the feature lineup put the No. 55h 11th based on point’s average. Again having to work where the field was not, Blake was able to advance to eighth.
“They worked the track before our feature, and man, it was wild. The top was vicious if you hit it right, and the bottom was there and was just a fast so you couldn’t make a mistake without it costing you. I think and one point, we got up to about sixth or seventh, but just got hung up behind a couple slower cars. I just have to thank Jerry for allowing me to drive his car.”
Back on the road this weekend, Hahn will be at RPM Speedway on Friday, May 25 and Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, May 26 with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
The 2018 season is Blake Hahn’s 16th year of racing.
